Of Dead Trees and Excellent Food

I know, I know.  I’ve been on vacation since last Monday and I haven’t posted once.  Well, I’m going back to work tomorrow, so I figured I’d get one cranked out to avoid total ignominy.  There really isn’t much of note to blog about.  We’ve been keeping busy with Christmas coming up and everything.  It’s been one of those times where we’ve been busy every day, but I couldn’t really tell you what we’ve been doing.  Here are a couple of quick notes for your enjoyment, though.

Last Monday we bought a Christmas tree, which was our first live tree.  It will probably also be our last.  I always had a live tree when I was a kid, and I like having one.  I like the smell and the needles and the…liveness.  The problem with our tree is that it was only alive until we got it in the house.  Or maybe not even that long.  It was weird because when we got it over at Lowe’s, everything seemed fine.  The needles were soft, I shook it to make sure they didn’t fall off, and all that stuff.  Then I got it home and sawed a piece off the bottom and put it in the house, and within a few hours the needles were falling off if you looked at them funny.  So I was not pleased.  I called Lowe’s to see if they have a guarantee on the freaking $30 dead tree that I had bought, and they didn’t.  So now we have a dead tree in the house until next Monday.  What, you think I’m buying another one?  You’re nuts.  We just put a few low-impact decorations on it, and we’re good to go.  No lights, though.  That would be sure to knock out some needleage.

Yesterday was the wife’s birthday.  I took her out Friday and we went down to Indy to a place called The Melting Pot.    Holy crap.  It was delicious.  It’s a fondue place.  We got this four-course meal that started out with a cheese fondue, moved on to a salad with a really good house dressing, then the main course which we cooked in a vegetable broth base fondue, and then a ridiculously awesome dessert.  Very expensive, but very worth it.  We were there for about 2 ½ hours (eating fondue is a process, you see. So if you go, go with someone you like).  I won’t go into more detail about the menu because you can see it on the website, but I will just say that nothing was less than excellent.  And you can just go for dessert if you want, so I highly recommend that some time.  Good stuff.

Luke is doing well.  Christmas should be fun with him.  He’ll be more interested in boxes and wrapping paper than anything else, but that’s alright.  I can’t believe he’s going to be one year old in two weeks.  It seems like a long time ago that Jessica was pregnant, but it doesn’t seem like he’s already been here for a year.  I’ll put up some pictures soon.

By the way, remember that whole “I might be moving to Bloomington” thing?  Yeah, me too.  I haven’t heard anything about an interview yet, though.  So I’m just kind of hanging out right now.  I was able to skip the first round of interviews because it’s with the regional manager, who knows me and figured she didn’t need to interview me.  So now they’re figuring out who of the other interviewees is going on to the next level (flying to Illinois and interviewing with a bunch of people).  I’m guessing once they know they’ll let me know.  This whole process is just frustrating because I haven’t heard an update in like two weeks.  That’s just how big corporations are though—especially this time of year.  It’s actually better (if I get the job) to wait until after the holidays because the house market is better in the late winter/spring (for sellers, anyway).  So I’ll keep everyone updated with any developments I might hear about.

By the way, I haven’t forgotten about Eight Cents.  I’ll be posting there at some point.  I’ve decided to forego movie reviews in favor of reviewing TV and music.  I think I’m better at those than movies.  So keep an eye out for that in the coming days.  I’ve got a few albums on tap for that.

Song of the Day: “Distant Lover”, by Marvin Gaye.  Marvin Gaye is the man.  If you think otherwise, I’ll kindly ask you to stop being wrong.
