I usually don't like to do short posts, in case no one has noticed, but I just read an article from Bill Simmons, a.k.a. "The Sports Guy" on espn.com, about NBC's reality show "The Contender". Now I know at least some of the people that read my blog hate reality TV, but you should give this show a shot. It's not getting great ratings, but it's just a good show. It's not your typical exploitive, shameless reality show. Give this column a read. Simmons mentions how at the end of this past week's episode, his wife (The Sports Gal) was crying. So was my wife. As I said, it's not your typical reality show. It's at different times intense, poignant, and unintentionally hilarious. Also there's Sylvester Stallone, who alone is worth the price of admission. Again, I wouldn't normally plug a reality show, because I know a lot of people who read here hate it. This one's different. If you read the column, you'll see that Simmons likes pretty much any reality show. I'm not that way, and I love this show. Anyway, I'll shut up now and let you read the column and then maybe you can check out the show on Sunday night. I think you'll enjoy it. Hopefully I'm gearing up for a big post here. I'm still pretty busy with house stuff, but I'll throw down a big post soon.
Once again, it's been too long since I've posted. I do have a valid excuse, though, as I've prepared to move, moved, and dealt with the aftermath of moving. The aftermath part is much different, I've found, when one moves into a house. There's all sorts of decisions to make, odds and ends to fix or modify in one way or another, etc. Also, I've found that it's much more expensive to move into a house. I've never spent so much money in my life. And it's not even time to start lawn care season yet. Or grilling season. (You didn't really think I'd go without a grill now that I have somewhere to grill, did you?)
So anyway, I didn't have any internet for a while, and then it took a while to get the computer set up because certain parts were scattered throughout our suddenly much larger living space. In an apartment, there are relatively few places in which one can lose one's possessions. In a house, that space multiplies. So I'm still using a pad of paper for a mousepad until that particular thing is found. Anyway, I just wanted to do a quick post from work to reassure everyone that I'm still alive. Hopefully I'll be putting up some more news later. Everyone take care.
Song of the Day: "Sitting Waiting Wishing" by Jack Johnson. I like Jack Johnson more than John Mayer simply because he's less annoying, but no particular song stands out for me with his stuff. This song gets picked only for its video, which is awesome. Dylan, if you haven't seen it, I've got it TiVo'd, so you should come check it out. That title might not even be right. Whatever.

In the interest of not boring anyone out of their respective skulls, I'll just sum up the last couple of days quickly. I went to work on day four, then came home that night and had ribs from Damon's. To keep on the food theme of this week, I think Damon's ribs could be better. The meat is tender and comes off the bone easily, which is a good quality for ribs to have of course, but I could use some more sauce. When I get a plate full of ribs, I don't want to be able to see the meat itself. I want to see a sheet of sauce covering what I think might be some ribs. If you give me two packets of extra barbecue sauce with my ribs (which they did), that means I don't have enough on the ribs themselves. That's all I have to say about that.
The drive home on Friday was blissfully uneventful, as I decided to take everything with me this time. That tends to make things much more pleasant. It's about a five hour drive when you don't get lost, so that's about how long it took me to get back home. It's nice to be back. I went and got Jessica and Luke from the airport earlier today. The poor kid had a rough time with the whole flying thing coming back, but he's sleeping now, so he'll probably get over it.
Of course, my own personal return to Kokomo would have been better if I didn't have to work on Saturday morning, but whatever. At least I have Thursday and Friday off so that we can move, which everyone knows is the perfect way to spend one's day off. Speaking of the move, we had a fun thing happen tonight. The people living in the house right now called tonight and talked to Jessica for a bit. I could tell there was some subject that was making her a bit uneasy, so I was curious as to what was going on. I had a random thought in the back of my head wondering "what if they're asking if we want their dog?", when lo and behold, she got off the phone and said "You're not gonna believe this". She was right. How weird is it that I was thinking about something as abstract as that? Anyway, when we were over there, I made a comment about how I liked their dog. I'm a dog lover, so I like pretty much all dogs. My wife, on the other hand, has never had a pet other than a rabbit that they kept in a hutch in the back yard when she was younger. So I guess the house they're moving into has a backyard that's all mud, and they don't want to keep the dog in that yard. That seems like a bit of a weak reason to me...almost like they were looking for a reason to get rid of the dog, but I could be wrong. Who knows? So we'll see what happens on that front. It should be interesting. I'll keep you updated.
If this post seems disjointed and rambling, please accept my apologies. I can hardly keep my eyes open, but I wanted to get this done before I wasn't in the mood anymore.
Song of the Day: "Turn the Page", by Bob Seger. Good stuff. Metallica also did a cover of this song, which was good as well.
Alright...here's some pictures like I promised so many times:

This Luke when he was three days old.

This is him a couple of days ago, next to his cousin Nathan (born Feb. 18, I believe). Luke is on the left.

This is also a couple of days ago. Is this not the cutest baby you've ever seen? He's nine weeks old now.

Note: The posts for this week will be posted the day after they are written (I have to post at work, and I write them after work).
If there is a Buffalo Wild Wings in your area (and you're hungry), go there now. I just had some tonight, and it was great. I sure have talked a lot about food this week, haven't I? It may have also been the journey that I took in order to get to the place that made it taste better. It's a sports bar & grill, and it happens to be in a part of town here where I hadn't yet been. Namely it wasn't on the 2 mile stretch between the hotel and work. It was where all the college students hang out--the downtown area of Athens. After going there, at least from what I could see, it made me think better of the city as a college town. Of course, my destination for dinner was in a jungle of one way streets, and I had no idea where I was, so it was an adventure. I actually passed it once by chance, but there was no place to park. So I just found the first available place (which turned out to be closer than I thought) and walked around for 20 minutes until I found it again. I found out on the way back to the car that it was actually only about a 5 minute walk, but I had wings, so I was happy.
Things at work are pretty tame. I was busy today, but I was doing the same thing for about 6 hours save some interruptions. But at least I felt like I was helping out.
NFL free agency started today. Usually that's a boring time for me, since my Eagles don't usually make too many waves with the signing of big free agents. Last year was the exception, of course, with Jevon Kearse and Terrell Owens joining the team. It'll be interesting this year to see how many of their own free agents will rejoin the team.
On a side note, sometimes I check to see who's visiting my blog, and today I saw that there have been a few visits from an IP address in Newark, DE. I'm from Newark! Do I know you? I don't know if anyone back home even knows I have a blog....feel free to leave a comment and unravel the mystery for me.
I don't really have much else to say today. The receiver for my surround system got delivered at the office for our apartment complex. That will present some interesting temptations without my wife around. I may just have to grab my speakers from Dylan's attic and fire it up for a test run on Friday night. We shall see.
Song of the day: "You'll Think of Me", by Keith Urban. This may be the first appearance of a country song on the song of the day. It was only a matter of time, really. This one is pretty good in its studio version, but he did a performance of it with John Fogerty on "Crossroads" (a show on CMT where a country artist does a show with a rock/non-country artist and they perform songs from both of them), and it was really good. As much as I love a song that grabs a hold of you and rips your face off, I also love the songs that can grab your heart and choke you up. That was one of those performances. One of the ones where you know this guy wrote the song when he was really going through that situation. Anyway, enough sappiness for now. I'll be back tomorrow with more excitement.

I don't know how people do this. I've been here for a day and a half and I'm already lonely. I guess that comes partly from not living by myself, but still. I guess I'm just not used to it. But I still don't think I could travel all the time for a job. I hate talking on the phone (which my wife wants to do since we're not together), I have no friends or anyone that I know here, and I go back and forth between work and a hotel room. Ugh. Oh well. Also, if I want to watch a movie, it's 10 bucks. Ten bucks! That's just regular movies, too. (I just checked, and porn movies are also 10 bucks. But why spend 10 bucks to see some boobs when...I'll let that comment trail off before I get myself in trouble.)
I guess Luke is smiling more often now. He was just doing it a little bit on Saturday before they left for Delaware (I don't know if I mentioned it--Jessica took Luke and went to her parents' house for the week). Now Jessica's telling me he smiles all the time. Did I mention he's the cutest baby ever? I'll have to post pictures when I get back home. Remind me or I'll forget. Funny story about him, by the way. When they flew out on Sunday, they went to visit my parents, who didn't know that they were coming. It was the first time my dad got to see him, so that was nice. Also, my mom was taking a nap when they got there, and my dad brought Luke in to see her. My sister just had her baby a few weeks ago, so she thought (since her eyes were still kind of closed) that it was Nathan (that's the baby's name, and there are a lot of parentheses in this post so far). Then she opened her eyes and freaked out. That's the end of my story.
I was all ready to have Papa John's tonight, and then I found out they don't take American Express, which is the corporate card that I have. That did not make my day. But then I got Bob Evans and took it to the hotel, and it was really good. I got some slow roasted pork tenderloin with cole slaw and mashed potatoes and cranberry bread. The cranberry bread was excellent, as was the loin. The potatoes were not so good because they tasted like broccoli. Oh wait, that's because they gave me broccoli instead of potatoes. I know I'm a big guy and all, but do you really have to sabotage my order to make me eat healthier? Another thing about traveling--it will make you gain weight in a hurry. With my free meals, there's now no debate over whether I'll get dessert. I will get it every time. Tonight it was blackberry cobbler with ice cream. This would have been great if I liked extremely tart things with seeds in them. But I'm not, so it wasn't so great. Tomorrow I'll be sure to get something chocolate. Can't go wrong there. And maybe a steak for dinner. Steak is good. But enough about food.
I've realized that without TiVo, I have no idea when anything is on. Not that it matters much, since everything's being recorded. I just thought I'd mention that. I thought I might catch a few shows, but I haven't. I actually watched a show called Carnivale tonight. It's one of those HBO original shows. Now, I've watched a lot of TV in my day, but I've never seen anything as weird as this show. I don't know if it would have been less weird if I knew the storyline, but I doubt it. From what I gathered, it's about carny-types in the '30s. Interesting premise, but I don't know if I'll check it out again. It just kind of creeped me out.
I'm pretty much ready to go back to my own workplace in Kokomo. It's fine here and all, but it's just not the same. Being in an FDA regulated industry, you'd think that it's the same everywhere, but it's not. The basic idea is, of course, and procedure is identical, but there are so many center-specific things that you never even think about. Anyway, that's enough for today.
Song of the day: "Whipping Post", by the Allman Brothers. If you don't have this song, download it immediately. A guy sang it on American Idol the other night (you may commence laughing at me for watching American Idol), and it was great. It reminded me what an awesome song this is. It's one of those ones that, when it's sung live, is either excellent or terrible. This one was the former. It was so good, I thought about voting. While I'm at it, are there any other American Idol fans out there? I know my live night crew mocks me for watching, but what about the rest of you (if there is a rest of you)? Watergirl? You with me here?
(As a final note, I just ran spell check, and "boobs" was not in the dictionary, but "boobies" was. I'm just sayin'.)

Note: The posts for this week will be posted the day after they are written (I have to post at work, and I write them after work).
Well, I'm in Athens after a relatively uneventful day. I've only been over about 3 miles of road here (my hotel is close to the center where I'm working for the week), but for a college town, this doesn't seem like a very happenin' place. I'm sure it gets better as you get closer to campus. Maybe.
So it took about 5 hours or so to get here in my rental Grand Am. That car feels very huge, and I drive an Explorer. It feels like it's the same size but lower to the ground. There was an interesting start to my trip this morning as I got about 20 minutes down the road and realized I had forgotten the garment bag with my clothes in it. (You'll enjoy this part) I intentionally left the bag behind when Dylan picked me up to go get the rental. I wanted a reason to come back because I was sure I would forget something, and I didn't want to just not go back because I didn't feel like it. Well sure enough I forgot something, and when I went back to the apartment, I grabbed the thing that I had forgotten (something relatively insignificant for which I probably wouldn't have come back had it not been for my clothes being in the apartment as well), and I left the garment bag. If the preceding paragraph seems confusing and poorly worded, just let it suffice to say that I am a giant moron.
So anyway, I got on the road well after I had planned, and drove about five hours in constant rain. At least it hadn't started snowing yet. Driving in the snow actually doesn't faze me that much anymore because of a story that I won't tell right now in the interest of saving my hand the extra writing. But to get back to the point, the drive was wet. Was that the only point of all that? How depressing. In other news, a big thumbs down goes to mapquest today. I had the wrong exit number and the wrong mileage listed on my directions in two places. And it was really off. About 100 miles. Luckily I went with my instincts instead of the directions. Unfortunately, though, I didn't have a map with me (this post could be a list of reasons why I'm an idiot), so it took a bit longer to get where I was going.
If anyone is looking for a couple of good books, check out The Poet and The Narrows, both by Michael Connelly. The second book is a sequel to the first. In case you're wondering what this has to do with anything, I've been listening to The Narrows on CD as I'm driving.
Once I got here I came into the center and talked to the guy that I'd be helping out this week. He's also an assistant manager (ass man as I like to call it). The funny thing is that none of the staff had any idea that I was coming or that their own manager wouldn't be there this week. They've had quite a few people coming and going over the last little bit, though, so they took it in stride.
In the first of five nights on which I will be eating out for free, I went to the Ponderosa steakhouse. I thought, foolishly I suppose, from the name that it might have been like a normal steakhouse, but it was more of a buffet style place that had steak. I wasn't a big fan. (Disclaimer: If I complain about food this week, it doesn't mean I'm not glad it's free) I think I'm going to mostly get take out this week, because I don't want to sit in a restaurant by myself. Plus if I'm in the hotel, I don't have to be dressed (get that mental image out of your head! hahahahaha!).
As for the hotel, I'm staying at the Amerihost Inn. It's a nice enough place. When I came in, they told me that there were no non-smoking rooms with a king-size bed like I had requested when I made the reservation online, so they had to upgrade me to a room with a whirlpool. So that was pretty cool. Unfortunately, as I soon found out, whirlpools are not as fun when you're by yourself. My only gripe about the hotel is that I can't get my xbox hooked up online. They have wireless internet access, but not all of the rooms are hardwired, and non of the whirlpool rooms are. So I'll be missing live night this week. Other than that, everything seems to be going pretty well.
Hopefully after reading this post, you're still awake and you haven't vowed never to return to my blog again. I'll be back with more tomorrow--hopefully it'll be more interesting.
Song of the day: "Cold Hard (so and so)", by Jet. I never know when my mom or someone might be reading this, so the title has been censored. Nevertheless, this song is awesome. Especially for driving. This is another one that you can't hear without turning up the volume. Try it.

Try it.
