Is that how you spell that word? It looks like it should be hyphenated or something. Anyway, on to today's random thoughts.
Something I've noticed lately is that there are a lot of songs on the radio that seem to be without any kind of refrain or climax. Case in point: There's a new song out by Nelly and Tim McGraw. (The aptly titled "Over and Over Again".) Seeing as how I like a lot of both of their material, I figured it would probably be a decent tune. I was wrong. The first verse starts out well enough, but the issue I have is that the whole song sounds exactly like the first verse. It's like they have one verse and then they just made a loop of it. It's kind of ridiculous, actually. This got me thinking about a lot of different songs that do the same thing. There's a new one by Perfect Circle (I believe it's called "Blue") that does the same thing. You hear this guitar riff that plays again and again, and then some meaningless lyrics are played on top of it.
I could go on, but my point is this: what's happened to rock music? Saying that makes me feel old, but seriously, what's going on here? I still like stuff like Metallica (except for the most heinous "St. Anger" album) and Pearl Jam, but where is anything else worth listening to? I must admit, with the slim pickings on the radio these days, my new guilty pleasure is Linkin Park. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Are you an angst-ridden teenager?". Well I'm not. If you want to hear a song that builds up and hits a climax, check out "Lying From You". Good stuff. Now, I'm not saying that everything should have such a stark contrast from beginning to end. All I'm saying is that nothing rocks anymore. Bear in mind, of course, that I live in Kokomo, IN and my problem may just be that I don't have access to the good stuff through the radio. If anyone knows any good bands, let me know. And don't even say Radiohead. Radiohead makes me want to jump out a window. I want something that rocks. Not something weird.
In closing, it seems that just like my Eagles yesterday who had an off game, I'm having an off day post. I'll do better next time.
