The List: Hilarious Shows

This is the first installment of "The List". It's a feature where I'll be listing stuff. Complicated, I know, but you'll get used to it. Nothing on the list is in any particular order unless I say otherwise. Also, I must say that I've never written any kind of review before, so if my comments are disjointed and weird, that's why. So let's get on with it. Here are some hilarious shows:

  • Scrubs: I love Scrubs. Every actor on the show plays his or her part flawlessly, and unlike a lot of sitcoms, we don't only tune in for the wacky hijinks. We actually care about the characters. And yet, none of this stops the show from being extremely funny. Seriously red-in-the-face-even-when-you're-watching-it-alone-funny.
  • The King of Queens: Kevin James is one of the funniest people I've ever seen. He's not one of those guys that is funny in stand-up, but a horrible actor. Also, his show doesn' seem like he's just running through his stand-up material. I saw a special of his on Comedy Central ("Sweat the Small Stuff"), and it makes a serious run at being the funniest stand-up special I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of them. I'm not even kidding. Add in that Jerry Stiller plays his father-in-law, and how can you go wrong? There are many many more awesome things about this show, but I'll stop there. Just watch it if you don't already.
  • Arrested Development: This show was recently given the Emmy for best comedy. It was probably a move by the voters to try and keep it on the air. The ratings haven't been fantastic, but the show is ridiculously funny. It's an outstanding ensemble cast with Jason Bateman at the head. I was skeptical too at first, but he's excellent in the show. Jeffrey Tambor plays a former executive that was arrested for embezzlement and is now in jail. Jason Bateman is his son, who lives in a model home with his insane family. It would take too much time to explain. Just watch it. It premieres Sunday on Fox at 8:30 EST.
  • Everybody Loves Raymond: I don't think I need to say much about this one. The supporting cast steals the show, and if you ask me, it could go on without Ray Ramano and be fine. Maybe even better than it is. Nothing against Ray, mind you. His character is great. It wouldn't be too awful hard, though, to get another neurotic New York comic to take his place. I'm just sayin'.
  • The Simpsons: Sure, it hasn't been as good recently, but I don't need to say anything about this one either. A show that's been on for as long as this one has speaks for itself. Hopefully the new season (Sunday at 8:00 EST) will bring good things. Treehouse of Horror has always been fun.
  • South Park: You may disagree, but the show is hilarious. Social commentary, offensive at times, always vulgar and sometimes tasteless, but almost always very funny.

Honorable mention goes to The Bernie Mac Show. Bernie is great and I always enjoy the shows, but the storylines have been largely the same. ("America, what'm I gonna do with these doggone kids?") Check it out if you haven't seen it. I've heard that they're trying to go a different direction with it when it comes back on the air, so maybe it'll make the list next time.

If you enjoy comedy, I can't urge you enough to check out at the very least the first three shows listed. Those are definitely the three funniest shows around at this point.
