Am I Asking Too Much?

I consider myself relatively easy to please. I enjoy the simple things in life. Things like customer service and getting what I pay for. You know the types of things I mean. So when I go to the grocery store and try to get some lunchmeat, all I want is for them to slice the meat and cheese like I'm asking them to slice it (thin). Instead, what I get is a half pound of cheese containing three slices all about an inch thick. What am I supposed to do with that? Use it in a karate demonstration in place of wood blocks? I can't eat it, that's for sure. Also, I was in the process of reassembling my soon-to-be-new, yet-to-be-purchased wallet by calling and canceling my missing cards and getting new ones. I know when I call that there isn't going to be an option for replacing a lost card (I don't know why this is, and I should point out that American Express actually did have this option). So I try to go straight to an operator. Is that possible? No. I have to go through 400 menus and use the "other" option on each one until I get to an operator who re-verifies all my information that I've entered 3 times. The process took about 10 minutes with each card except for American Express, which took about 2.5 minutes. Of course, when I got to the operator for one of the cards, he asked me for my name, only to mispronounce it right after I told him what it was. (He put a long "e" sound in the name instead of a short "e", so I don't think he just misheard me. That's just reading my name off the screen and not paying attention.)

Complaining aside, it was a good weekend. Mr. and Mrs. AtomicU2 came and stayed with us this past weekend along with their daughter Chantrea. They're on their way to Maryland where they'll stay till February when they head off to Thailand to teach English. Hopefully we'll hear from him on his blog when they're out there and he can tell us about all the interesting happenings. So it was great to see them again. We got some Halo 2 in, spent some quality hanging out time together, and ate some good food. I got to show off the burgers I posted about a while back and that went over pretty well, and I always enjoy it when people enjoy my burgers. Unfortunately Shoeless Joel wasn't able to join us due to his school obligations, and the Nate Dogg of course is out in Napoleon Dynamite country. One day we'll all be able to get together.

It was fun to see Luke interact with Trea, who is about two months older than he is. She's also about seven pounds heavier. He just looks so little next to other babies. Not unhealthy or anything...just little. We always lose perspective until we see him with other babies (I'll post pictures later if Zimm doesn't beat me to it). Also, he's got this new thing going where he's always sticking out his tongue. I'm not sure what that's all about. He looks like Stimpy sometimes.

I got some pest control stuff today, so hopefully that will get rid of our omnipresent spiders. They're about to drive me nuts, so I finally had to break down and do something about it. I'll have updates on that as I see how it works. In other household news, I fried my weed whacker. I'm not sure how it happened, but after I was running it for a while, the head melted. Not good times. So I don't want to buy a new weed whacker, and I haven't priced heads yet, but with some luck I won't need to use it for the rest of the season. I'm probably dreaming there, but a guy can hope.

After last week, I've got a lot of thoughts about the whole New Orleans thing, but most of them have already been expressed on other blogs and commentaries. Check out Strude and my mom's latest posts in particular. The article on Strude's blog is absolutely unbelievable. I'm not saying Utah is my favorite place, but compared to New Orleans right about now, it doesn't seem too bad.

In conclusion, if anyone is trying to get a hold of me a week from today, just know that the Eagles are playing the Falcons in their first game of the 2005 season. So if I'm not watching the game, I'm probably preparing myself. I'm starting to get that feeling in my gut again. Football is here and I am pumped. Mock me if you will, but I love it. I'm excited for next year too, when I can start teaching Luke words like "Touchdown!" and "Fumble! Fumble!" I've got a 2005 season preview in the works this week, including picks. The problem with picks for a guy like me is that there are so many things you can't tell if you don't follow a team like I follow the birds. What I can tell you is that the Eagles are going to be really really good this year. Scary good. You hear a lot of talk about the Ravens defense, but the Eagles have the best secondary in the league, and...I'll just stop here before I get too carried away. The rest will come later. Elsewhere in the world of sports, the Phils open up a crucial series with the Astros this week. Since they can't win in the division, however, that in itself may make this series moot. I suppose we'll see. I still have faith, but I try not to talk about it too much because it just builds up my excitement and I hate getting let down every year.

Song of the Day: "Alcohol", by Brad Paisley. I don't even drink and I enjoy the song.
