When I start blogging in my head, I know it's been too long since I've posted. I'll say that much. Also, it occurred to me that it's been so long since I posted, you guys don't even know that the Fort Wayne ordeal is quickly coming to an end. If you read Zimm's blog, you know that the manager in Kokomo has moved on to bigger and better things, and that Zimm himself is taking a new position outside the realm of center operations. Since they just barely filled my old position of Assistant Manager, that would leave the Kokomo center essentially empty at the top. Since the Kokomo center is in a good place right now, and the company wants to keep it like that, my boss called me in Fort Wayne and wanted to know if I had any interest in returning to my old center, this time as the manager. Now, if I'm to speak frankly, Fort Wayne is a much cooler city than Kokomo. There's a lot more going on, there's a lot more to do, and it's the kind of city that I generally like. All that having been said, when the offer came in to go back, it was pretty tempting. So Jessica and I talked about it and weighed our options, making the old "pros and cons" lists for each city. The lists were pretty much the same lengths, but Jessica and I both knew from the time we started them that we were staying in Kokomo. We just knew that Kokomo is where we need to be right now. Why? No idea. But we're glad that we're able to stay where our friends are, especially the Zimms. So now I'm back. We don't have to sell the house, and as far as work goes, I may not get all the kudos for turning a bad center around, but I don't know that I really care about that anyway. I know I'm good at what I do, so whatever. The only question remaining at this point is what the frick I'm going to do when I outgrow this position. But as for the current situation, I say I'm back, but really I'm working out of the Kokomo center and still managing the Fort Wayne center. I'll be heading up there every other week or so, until they find a replacement for me (which, if I'm lucky, could be by the end of April). It'll be a huge weight off when the new guy gets there, because I'm still pretty much on the phone with my staff on a daily basis. The management up there is great, but they're all still very green, so they need a lot of help. If they can get a seasoned internal person in there (and it looks like they might), I could completely let go of Fort Wayne, which would be fantastic, even if I'll be a little disappointed that I won't see the fruits of my considerable labors over the last few months.
A byproduct of living at home again is realizing how much I need to get done, having done essentially nothing around the house as far as home improvement goes since August. So I've been trying to get a few things done lately. Unfortunately, the weather here is bipolar, and we went from warm spring weather to some pretty cold early-March type stuff lately. So I haven't been able to do a lot outside or in the garage, which really needs some of my attention.
We had the Zimms and Kristy's sister's family over for Easter today, which, as anyone who has spent Easter at our house before knows, included Egg Battles. Kristy went undefeated and took the title this year, in case you're curious. The basic idea behind Egg Battles (my mom can tell you what it's really called--it's a Greek name) is that you decorate your hard boiled egg, then you smack either end of your egg against someone else's, and whoever's end breaks is the loser. This continues with different opponents until one person remains standing with at least one end intact. It's always lots of fun, with as many as 10 adults decorating eggs and cackling like goofballs the whole time.
On the baby front, Jessica is due on May 9, and I think she's pretty much ready for it to be May 9. Personally, I'm hoping that we'll be able to check out the Spider-Man 3 premiere before the baby comes, but we'll see how that goes. Speaking of movies, though, I just saw a couple of really good ones. Last night, we watched "Children of Men", which was excellent and filmed in a really effective way so that the story resonates after it's over. The other was "300", which is on the opposite end of the spectrum, but so much fun to watch. It was visually spectacular, and I thought the balance between story and action was perfect. I tell you, Frank Miller (who also wrote the source material for "Sin City") is getting the royal treatment in Hollywood, at least for those two adaptations. I'm looking forward to more, if the directors can continue to pull it off like they have. But wait, I was talking about kids, wasn't I?
Luke is doing well. He's talking more, and even though he's not saying complete sentences, he's starting to put words together, and he's actually starting to try to learn words and numbers and letters. Some of his words are hilarious, as is often the case with two-year-olds. His name is Ook, and his favorite drink is choco mook. His favorite breakfast is O Moops (Froot Loops), and of course he also enjoys the occasional nonut (donut) when circumstances allow. Those are, of course, just a few, but hopefully I can get into a groove here and start posting more regularly with actual stories and whatnot.
Anyway, I think that's about it for now. Whenever I have these big gaps, I start posting thinking of how much I have to talk about, but it always ends up leaking out of my ears once I get my initial point across. So hopefully I'll be around more often now, or at least once I'm really back for good, and I'll have something of substance to say. Until then, some notes:
-TV in high def is fantastic. If you've got HD--or even if you haven't--you need to watch the series "Planet Earth" on the Discovery Channel. Fascinating stuff, and beautiful photography.
-There are a few entertaining and informative movie critics out there - Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper are two, (which seems like a mainstream thing to say, but hey--there's a reason why they're on TV), and another is Eric Snider. In addition to generally agreeing with his reviews, I love reading his negative reviews of movies that everyone knows are going to be horrendous. Here's the latest. You're welcome.
I was going to go on a few more tangents, but I'm sleepy and this is getting long. Till next time.
